Description:
Roman Tadeusz Wilkanowicz (1886-1933), son of a January insurgent, journalist, satirist, publisher (including the satirical magazine “Pręgierz Poznański”), and also one of the creators and animators of Poznań cabarets and satirical plays (Różowa Kukułka [Pink Cuckoo], Źdzebko [A Little Bit] and Klub Szyderców [Mockers’ Club]). One of the organisers of the Wielkopolska Uprising and one of those who definitely aimed at its outbreak. He was an undisciplined soldier, which sometimes caused many troubles to his commanders, so it was no accident that he joined the so-called Death Battalion, a unit consisting of Wielkopolska insurgents who were not accepted by the Uprising command (also for political reasons), and who in April 1919 received the order to fight in the distant Vilnius region.
The story of Roman Tadeusz Wilkanowicz – a rebellious artist, satirist, journalist, publisher and above all a patriot and heroic soldier, as well as the father of Roman Tadeusz, also a graphic artist, who fought in the underground during World War II and was killed in the Warsaw Uprising (both men are notoriously mistaken because of the same names).
